Meet James Nelson

Project Manager – Solar

In this article, we take a closer look at what it’s like to work at Shell Energy, from the perspective of James Nelson, Project Manager for Solar in our B2B Retail team.

What first attracted you to working at Shell Energy?

I joined in the first week of July 2022 and have been with the company for more than six months now. I was attracted to the size, scope and reach of the business, as well as the customers and the variety of projects. Everyone knows and recognises the Shell brand, and it has a reputation as a global leader in the energy industry. I had previously worked with some of the Shell Energy team, so I knew there were good relationships and good people here, and I had heard good things about the business from them.

Tell us about your first impression of Shell Energy.

It was good. Starting at Shell Energy was a smooth and organised process. New starters are given everything they need to get up and running quickly, including a laptop, phone, and training modules (which I was given plenty of time to complete). The team were supportive and patient, offering all the help and guidance a new employee may need. The facilities are top-notch, and the office is the nicest I’ve ever worked in. The use of flexible desks is also a highlight, as it encourages you to not sit in the same spot every day, get to know your colleagues and work together in a shared environment.

What’s it like to work here?

The culture at Shell Energy is collaborative, inviting, and friendly, and everyone feels supported. The team helps new employees to get up to speed and support each other in their daily tasks. If you don’t know the answer to something, there is always someone to help.

What does collaboration in your team look like?

Our team is spread interstate but connect frequently with regular catch ups. We all make a genuine effort to check in with each other personally and professionally, to get to know everyone a little bit better. The work we do is serious because we’re creating solutions for complex energy challenges, but we always have a good amount of fun. The team is growing and participating in many new projects, requiring a greater need for reviewing and improving processes, while looking for efficiencies. Everyone’s input is valued, and different ideas are discussed and used to make decisions.

What is your favourite thing about working here?

The sense of community and the people! The company is supportive of social events and functions, helping to foster a sense of community and friendship amongst colleagues. There’s a strong sense of connection, and a lot of my team are genuine friends.

Interesting, innovative, and high impact work

I have been working in the renewable energy industry for more than 12 years and I’m very passionate about the environment and making a positive impact – both inside and outside of work. Through my role, I’m able to deploy renewable energy on a larger scale, helping to make progress towards a more sustainable energy future. I’ve gone from installing 2–3 kilowatt systems on residences, to now managing the installation of megawatt systems for Shell Energy customers. My values align strongly with Shell Energy because I’m able to do work that is interesting, innovative and impactful on the environment and Australia’s energy transition.

How do Shell Energy’s leaders communicate and model the company culture?

Leadership communication and modelling company culture is an important aspect of working life at Shell Energy. Leaders are supportive, always available to answer questions and provide guidance. Regular team meetings and morning scrums help to keep everyone informed and up to date on what’s going on within the team and across the wider business. Everyone is given the opportunity to participate in meetings and see how leaders operate and communicate with customers.

What excites you about the future of energy?

Australia is a world leader in renewable energy, and Shell Energy is at the forefront of this transition, offering new and innovative products to the market, including new battery solutions for our commercial customers that are also helping smooth out the electricity grid. We have an attractive offering for customers, as an energy retailer, but also as a provider of renewable energy solutions.

Any advice for someone looking to join our team at Shell Energy?

Do it. It has been a great experience for me and a smooth transition coming into a new company. It is a really exciting place to work. Also, don’t always book the same desk, move around and speak to new people, gain some new friendships. There are lots of interesting, nice and fun people at Shell Energy.
